Bonjour Bruxelles

La vie bruxelloise: The Brussels Life.  Like the vegetable, the eponymous city has been given a bad rap over the years.  Both are seemingly boring, green, good for you, associated with formal gatherings...  I happen to be a great admirer of the brussels sprout, and am hoping that over the course of three months I become a big fan of my new home as well.  Here's to keeping a public record for friends, family, and other folks!

As many of you know, I am a bit of a nomad and it can be hard to keep tabs on me.  It was a quick decision to come to Brussels after finishing my MA in London.  While London is a city with amazing opportunities, it is also full of competition for jobs.  When I moved out of my house, I was convinced by a variety of factors (no job offers, sleeping on my friend's couch, and my mother) that I needed to do something related to my year of study, even if it didn't pay.

Again, taking the lowly brussels sprout as inspiration, sometimes we have to do things simply because they are good for us.  It feels a bit frightening to change careers after teaching, to go from making little money to absolutely no money, but in the end, I think it will be a creative experience in all senses of the word.  I can handle a few months of working for free if it takes me someplace interesting.  So here I am, hopefully making some decent films about young people and food in my new career as a "visual anthropologist."  I may attempt to explain this ambiguous term in the future, but in the meantime you can keep guessing while I keep sprouting, in Brussels.
